The Musicians
of All Saints
The musicians of All Saints have developed the reputation
over the years for a mixed repertoire of well and lesser-known
musicians. Tonight’s concert at Hamsey Church is no
exception: a four-piece ensemble will be playing works by
Mozart, Haydn… and Frank Bridge. Bridge is best known
to music lovers as being part of the title of the work which
made Benjamin Britten’s name: Variations on a Theme
of Frank Bridge for String Orchestra. Britten, in fact, was
a pupil of Bridge’s. The piece played tonight, Two Old
English Songs, is a fine example of Bridge’s clever
and melodious work. He takes two famous 18th century English
folk sons, Sally in our Alley and Cherry Ripe, and rearranges
the melodies, subtly enabling the harmonies to grow richer
and more complex as the piece progresses. This work is preceded
by Quartet in D Major, by Mozart, and Quartet in C Major,
by Haydn.
This is the first of a two night festival the MAS are putting
on in Hamsey Church, the second, next Sunday (18th) will feature
the Brighton Singers, the Brighton and Hove Youth String Ensemble
and the Dieppe Rivers Choir. Watch this space for more details
next week. Hamsey Church is a wonderful building, dating back
to Saxon times: although it has been reconstructed several
times it was never given the Victorian overhaul many local
churches suffered, so it still retains much of its original
medieval feel. |
