Outdoor Theatre - A
Midsummer Night’s Dream
Would summer be summer without an al fresco performance of
Midsummer Night’s Dream? Shakespeare’s magical
woodland play is performed in parks and gardens over the country
throughout the summer, rain or shine. Tonight you can enjoy
the play courtesy of newly founded drama group Lewes Community
Theatre, who are performing it in the grounds of Lewes New
School. It will be directed by Meriel Whale who once worked
as a volunteer teacher in a Tibetan refugee camp in Bangalore:
all the proceeds from the show will go towards helping rebuild
a nursery school in the camp.
We doubt the performance will be as unconventional as a recent
version put on in (or, in fact, over) the Bard’s birthplace.
Sleep researchers at the University of the West of England
teamed up with an artist and composer to perform a concert
in the air inspired by ‘The Dream’. Hot air balloons
floated low over the Stratford upon Avon rooftops, serenading
sleepers beneath, to see how their dreams were affected. Actually,
everybody woke up to go and have a look at the spectacle,
but it was a great idea.
No matter: the tale of a group of young lovers and amateur
actors who interact with the fairies in a moonlit forest can
hardly fail to delight. Pack up a picnic, pre-chill a bottle
of wine and pull up a deck chair to sample the delights of
Shakespeare al fresco. And don’t forget your umbrellas,
just in case. ER
