Which newspaper do you read?
The Guardian on Saturdays. Otherwise the Independent, but
only if I’m travelling to London.
How often do you go to London and Brighton?
Sometimes I might not go to London for months at a stretch,
sometimes my work takes me there all the time. Brighton about
once a fortnight. I’m a novelist so I spend most of
my time sitting at home.
Are you pro or anti the Phoenix development?
I’ve been approached by Lewes Matters and the Phoenix
Action Group to do something artistic concerning the development.
I’m instinctively wary, but I’d need to know more
before making up my mind.
Favourite Lewes landmark? The
view from the top of Keere Street, and the twitten that runs
down to the All Saints. Especially that little green hobbit
door. Once, when she was 2-3, my daughter Isobel knocked on
it. A strange voice came from just behind it, saying, “go
away”. It scared the life out of us.
How would you spend a perfect Sunday
afternoon? In the Paddock opposite my house playing
football with my son.
What’s on your hifi? At
this moment it’s Cat Stevens’ Tea for the Tillerman,
but all week I’ve been listening to my friend the opera
singer Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who died last week. There’ll
never be a voice like it - go and buy her Handel disc, even
if you don’t like opera.
Lewes would be better if… There
were an arts officer on the Lewes District Council.
What Lewes really doesn’t need
is… A Burger King.
