Football - Lewes v
QPR
Lewes’s penultimate pre-season friendly will see quality
opposition in the shape of QPR coming to the Dripping Pan.
The R’s are likely to take this fixture pretty seriously
before starting their Championship season four days later.
A disappointing season last year saw the West Londoners finish
17th. Players to look out for include huge Nigerian international
defender Danny Shittu (you wouldn’t laugh about his
name if you met him in a dark alley) QPR veteran Kevin Gallen
and Paul Furlong, who used to be a Chelsea striker in the
days they couldn’t afford to buy the likes of Shevchenko.
Over the summer manager Steve King has strengthened the squad
whilst keeping hold of his main attacking assets, midfielder
Karl Beckford, striker Jamie Cade and, most significantly,
French U21 international Jean-Michel Sigere. It will be an
interesting test to see how the Rooks cope with a team three
divisions above them.
Talking about pre-season friendlies, Rooks fans might have
recognised a familiar face during the World Cup. Trinidad
and Tobago defender Brett Sancho – the one whose hair
was pulled by Peter Crouch before he scored that vital goal,
was on trial for Brighton when the Seagulls came to play Lewes
last season, meaning that he started his season at the Pan
and finished it at the World Cup. AL |
