- Loudon Wainwright III
You might remember Loudon Wainwright as the singing surgeon
in M*A*S*H. You might remember his as the resident singer
on the Jasper Carrot Show in the late eighties. You might
have seen his bit-part performance in the rom-com movie Elisabethtown,
which came out last year. Perhaps you remember his novelty
hit ‘Dead Skunk (in the middle of the road)’ in
1972. You could even remember him being billed as ‘the
new Dylan’ until around about the time that song came
out. Loudon Wainwright III, the son of a namesake father who
was editor of Life Magazine, is the sum of many parts. But
don’t let that detract from the fact that he is a seriously
talented musician, deeply respected in the trade, with a number
of unique LP’s under his belt, and a couple of Grammy
nominations, to boot. Wainwright’s sets are self-deprecatingly
funny, in a poignant sort of way, and his high-pitched voice
is unmistakable.
Wainwright headlines tonight’s concert in the Big Top,
supported by Darden Smith and Martha Tilston. Smith, a Nashville-based
Texan acoustic singer songwriter, has had a 20-year career
spanning the genres of pop, folk and country. He has been
called ‘the Texan Van Morrison’ for his poetic
lyrics set to melodious guitar music. His latest effort, the
LP ‘A Field of Crows’ is about connections. “We
crave connection,” he says, “it calms us and drives
us mad at the same time.” Footing the bill is up-and-coming
Brit Martha Tilston who Orpheus Magazine call ‘one of
Britain’s finest singer-songwriters’. AL
