Art - Peter Messer (continued)

Peter Messer been living off his painting for 25 years. There is no other artist who manages to capture the spirit of Lewes so well; the subtle dark spirit that courses through the veins of the town. As a closing gambit I ask him if he was self-taught. “I went to Brighton Art School, so… yes, I am self taught, I guess,” he says. And we go out to take some pictures of him standing against a flint wall opposite the pub.

Peter Messer’s Exhibition ‘Two dozen-odd small paintings’ is on in the Star Gallery from the 9th to the 19th of August. It includes 18 new works and a number of works bought by collectors and lent to the Gallery. Prices range from £85 - £2,250. AL
