Art – The Young
Ones at the Star Gallery
The Star Gallery is once again supporting new, fresh
talent in its Young Ones 2 exhibition which opens on Saturday.
The gallery has selected five promising artists from the University
of Brighton Degree Show 2006, these are Hannah Samsworth (two
plate aquatint/printmaking); Joseph Goouch (oil paintings);
Nicholas Templeman-Colley (linen hand-bound books); Ross Head
(collograph); Tom Goodchild (oil paintings). They will also
be exhibiting some stunning screenprints from Ellie Royle,
an undergraduate at the Glasgow School of Art. Commenting
on her inclusion in the show, Hayley Brown, Gallery Manager
commented “Ellie’s work was so strong it was hard
to ignore, and we wanted to find a way of sharing her work
with others, so we’ve sneaked her in.”
Other highlights in the show are Joseph Goouch’s oil
paintings – these are fascinating as each painting tells
a story, with little pockets of narrative embedded in each
of his small images. Painting with oil on board, his ideas
are inspired by books, magazines and children’s literature.
He told Viva Lewes that he loves collecting things and is
“inspired by the miscellaneous”. He added “I
love collecting old lost and found things and when I start
painting them I find a language between them. During the painting
process narratives are formed.” One of his striking
pieces is entitled 'You’re Like Making Tea in the Rain'
and is about hiding. “The characters in this painting
were inspired by some pictures I found in an old teacher's
handbook from the 60s, I started painting them and then the
story unfolded.” KA |
