The Battle of Britain
(continued...)
Neither side were defeated in any absolute sense but the Luftwaffe
did switch from daytime to night-time bombing raids from then
on. No-one would wish to deny the courage of the nation’s
fighter pilots but we can perhaps now see that, behind the
established myth of the Battle of Britain, lies a much more
complex story - and a broader group of people who need to
be equally celebrated for the roles they also played in preventing
German troops from landing in Kent and Sussex. JM
Newhaven Fort will host its annual Battle of Britain event
today with a series of special events including a memorial
flight of Spitfires and Hurricanes over the complex, a concert
by the Seaford Silver Band, and a demonstration by the Brighton
Jive Dancers. A re-enactment society will display a hospital,
command post and troop shelter throughout the day. There will
be a display of military vehicles and a re-union of the Women’s
Land Army. Organic and fair-trade refreshments will be served
in the Searchlight Café. |
