Meriel started the Community Theatre earlier
this year and their first production of A Midsummer Night’s
Dream at the Lewes New School was a sell-out. Not only did
the cast and crew have a blast, but they also raised £1000
for a charity close to Meriel’s heart." In 2003
I worked as a teacher at a school for Tibetan refugees in
southern India. They’ve hardly got any books, or any
toys and the roof leaks. When I returned to the UK I was determined
to help." Money raised from December’s production
will also help Compassion in World Farming and Mind. "So
often when you’re asked to do something for charity
you have run for miles or abseil off a tall building, but
this is a much more fun way of helping." It’s also
incredibly sociable. "There are still plenty of people
who took part in A Midsummer Night’s Dream who meet
up and go to the pub regularly. It’s a wonderful way
to meet new people."
If you fancy a bit of oh-no-you-don’t-oh-yes-I-do action,
the auditions will be held at Lewes New School on Friday between
7 and 9pm, and on Sunday between 2 and 5pm. ‘There’s
a special session for the under fifteens between 2 and 3pm
on the Sunday, so if the adults could hold off until 3.15pm
on Sunday, that would be a big help.’ It would also
help if you could phone in advance and let Meriel know you’ll
be going so she has idea of numbers. You can reach her on
07946 488883 and 473647. Dick Whittington will run for four
performances at the Town Hall on the first weekend in December.
