FA Cup 2Q
Saturday 31 September: Hendon 0 Lewes 2 (Beckford 70, Drury
93)
On Monday the FA Cup draw could have been kinder to us. We
beat Hendon away in the 2nd qualifying round, and got Dorchester
away in the third. You’re really hoping for a home tie,
of course, but it’s still a winnable game. Dorchester
are in the same division as us: they started the season in
good form, but tailed off a bit and are just below us in the
table. We’ll probably go over there on the Friday and
stay overnight; that’ll help a lot, because it’s
a long journey and it’s good getting the team together
before an important game.
We didn’t play our best against Hendon, but it was another
2-0 win, another clean sheet, and in the cup it’s not
important how you play, it’s important to get through
to the next round. What would you prefer: to play like Real
Madrid and go out, or not to play well and get through? It
was a potential banana skin, but we didn’t slip up,
like a number of teams did to lower-league opposition. Histon,
Western Super Mare, Thurrock and Braintree all went out. And
Eastbourne Borough were beaten by a team three or four leagues
down.
It took us a while to score, but Wilko only had to make one
save, and that was a header that came straight at him. Karl
Beckford put us ahead on 70 minutes, with a 25-yard shot which
slid under their keeper’s body. Our second came late
on from Juke Box (Andy Drury): Boothy slipped one through,
and he rounded the keeper and put it in. We’re getting
a few like that, it was a cool bit of finishing.
