Cinema - An Inconvenient Truth
If you are the sort of person that leaves lights on, this
film will make you go around turning them off. If you are
the sort of person who enjoys budget flight European city
breaks, this film will make you think about going local. If
you are the sort of person who drives everywhere, this film
will make you think about walking, or buying a bike. If you
are the sort of person who buys foreign vegetables from the
supermarket, this film will make you start getting a veggie-box
from a local grower. If you are the sort of person who has
any sort of social conscience, this film will make you change
the way you behave. ‘An Inconvienient Truth’,
in which former presidential candidate Al Gore gives out the
bald details of the causes and effects of global warming,
is the sort of film which is likely to change the way you
live your life. Whether it'll help save the planet is another
matter. Perhaps it's too late.
The powers behind the US government have tried to refute
the global warming theory by paying lackey scientists to dispute
the facts. But amongst bona fide scientists there is very
little debate. "There is no controversy about these facts,"
says Gore in the film. "Out of 925 recent articles in
peer-review scientific journals about global warming, there
was no disagreement. Zero." He provides statistics; he
gives evidence. It is all so very convincing. Don’t
drive to the All Saints tonight: you might end up walking
back.
(Norman Baker MP will present tonight’s film, which is also screened on Friday, Sunday and Monday). DL |
