Last week Adrienne Campbell wrote about her
experiences of being free from car ownership and setting up
a car share club - this is welcome news. She isn’t
alone and car share clubs are nothing new. The first club
in Lewes was set up in 1994 and the idea is thriving in Brighton
where three clubs have been set up. There are a number of organisations that can help to groups
start up their own community car scheme. A visit to the
Carplus website will be a good place to start or the WhizzGo
organisation. Both these groups have set up clubs in Brighton
& Hove.
Adrienne wanted to know if the County Council would help.
The quick answer is yes. We are always keen to help groups
to help each other. We don’t have the resources to set
up the schemes or to manage them but we would do whatever
we could to find ways of accommodating these cars close to
where they are needed. If you don’t need a car for anything other than a daily
trip to work the County Council have a car share data base
which matches individuals, drivers and passengers, to regular
trips - like daily commuting. The service is part of a national
scheme with over 135,000 members already registered and its
FREE. All you have to do is log onto www.travelchoice.org and register your trip - it can be used for regular journeys
or one off’s. Over 400 members of our own staff have
joined TravelChoice so we know it works.

You can get car-sharing tips from the council:
(for one thing it’ll help
split the parking fine)
