Dance - Meltdown Ceilidh

Meltdown Ceilidh is an organization which sets up ‘souped-up barn dances for the 21st century’ around Sussex. “We arrange ceilidhs with the best bands and the best callers in the country,” says organiser Penny Allen. “In this case it’s Rufus Returns, who are from Hampshire, but are renowned much further afield. English ceilidh, or E-ceilidh, isn’t barn dancing, the bands are a little more ‘up’. They are used to playing to crowds of up to 2,000 at folk festivals.” She stresses that this is not a night for purists who will sniff at anyone getting the steps wrong. “The callers are used to calling to a mixed bunch. The main thrust isn’t about getting it right. It’s about dancing with energy, and enjoying yourself”.

Brendan Reeves is the guitarist in Rufus Returns. “We’re more of a folk rock band than a folk band,” he says. “Our line up includes an electric violin, an accordian, a guitar and a drummer. The emphasis of a ceilidh band is to provide the backdrop to everyone having fun. It’s not exclusive dancing, like at a discoteque. Everyone gets up and looks stupid together. The caller will walk you through all the moves before the band starts up. There’s the dosey-do, the strip the willow, the swing, the arch, and the gallop, to name but a few.” The student discount means there should be a number of fresh faces at the dance; the bar is organised by the Commercial Square Bonfire Society, so expect a gold and black jersey or two in the crowd, too.
