Lewes Artists Exhibition

Forget jumble sales and ‘mufti’ days as a means of raising money to top up dwindling school funds. Western Road School is a bit more sophisticated - and for the fourth year running will host the Lewes Artists Exhibition - all commission on sales will go towards supporting the arts within the school. Many parents are working artists, so they will exhibit their own work and have used their clout to get other local artists on board. Matt Birch is one of the show’s organisers who’ll also be exhibiting. He said last year’s show “opened my eyes to the impressive range of artists’ and designers’ work being produced in just one small town… this year we’ve had a great response with over 25 local artists exhibiting.” Birch will exhibit his limited edition photographs. “The majority of my images are of local landscapes, seascapes and what could be described as ‘worm’s-eye views’ of wild plants - ox-eye daisies on Malling Down in June, or frosty grass in The Pells in January for instance.”

Local artist Nicole Griffin, who runs Carrington Griffin Design, has also helped organise the event. “Everything is available to be taken away on the day and prices range from £2 to around £200,” she says. She’ll be exhibiting work using a variety of mediums including felt work, textiles and mosaics. Other artists include Sarah Grisewood (paintings), Topsy Jewell (pottery) and Paul Bodham (metal sculpture). A fair trade café with home-made cakes, complete with children’s art display, will also be run by the parents. KA
