Arts and Crafts Fair - Michelham Priory

If you’re reluctant to fill the coffers of the multinationals this Christmas and prefer to buy local then Michelham Priory may be a good starting point. The Annual Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair takes place this weekend and will raise funds to support the Priory, (which dates back to 1229) and its seven acres of gardens which include England’s longest water-filled moat. As in past years (it has existed in this large format since 2002) the Elizabethan Great Barn will be filled by the East Sussex Guild of Craft Workers, with stalls displaying an array of craft items. “The barn provides an intimate and festive atmosphere in which to view beautiful pieces of original craftwork, all designed and created in the local area. It is an ideal setting to find stunning and unique Christmas presents,” says The Guild’s Alison Purdy. In addition, the main house and three chandelier-lit marquees on the east and west lawns will be bursting with other arts and crafts stalls. There will be a total of 105 stalls this year and over 2000 visitors per day are estimated. Goods on sale will include textiles, jewellery, toys, handmade chocolates, rocking horses, teddy bears, engraved glass, and gifts made from wicker, wood, and wool to name but a few. Admission is half the usual fee, so it’s a good opportunity to visit the stunning grounds too. Carols in the courtyard throughout the day will add to the festive feeling, as will an early visit to Santa (for £1) in his grotto (in the Forge). KA
