You could say that it was a game of two halves last Saturday at home to Yeading. They started better than us in the first half and had the ball in the net after five minutes. Ian Simpemba was muscled out of possession and their centre forward, Jefferson Louis (who used to play for us) finished coolly. After that we huffed and puffed but we didn’t get it right in the final third, and it was them that had the next good chance. It was Jefferson again who put in a great shot, which Aaron France saved brilliantly. Aaron was in for Danny Crane, who had a bit of a back injury, and it was only his second game in the first team. Mind you in his first, against Weymouth last season, he played in front of 5,000 people, so he wasn’t that unnerved.
Before half time Siggy had a good shot well saved by their keeper, but I wasn’t happy at the break and I let my feelings be known at half time. And the players responded. It was a completely different performance - we tore them apart, it was a bombardment on their goal. We kept getting free-kicks outside their area, which we didn’t capitalise on; then on the hour Boothy hit one which the keeper couldn’t hold and Siggy poked in the rebound. After that there was only one winner. We finally got our second with ten minutes to go when Juke Box capitalised on a defensive mistake to cool-headedly side-foot the ball into an empty net from just inside the box.
Our third, a few minutes later, was sublime. Juke Box was right in the corner with two men boxing him in. He shaped to go one way and… what he did next defies explanation. It was sublime. I’ve never seen anything like it.
