Name: Peter Richards
Profession: Butcher. There’s no other way of putting it, no modern term, like ‘meat technician’ or anything.
Are you local: if not how long have you been here? The business started here in 1934 and was run by my father before me and my grandfather before that. I was born in Ringmer and I’ve lived in other places, like Laughton and Ripe, but I’ve moved back.
Best thing about Lewes? It’s got to be the Brewery.
Worst thing about Lewes? The parking scheme.
Favourite pub? The Brewers. It used to be the Black Horse and the Pelham, but they’ve taken out the Harveys, so I have to walk a bit further now if I want a pint after work.
What’s your poison? See above. I also like a glass of red wine. I’m into Rioja at the moment.
Waitrose or Tesco (or neither)? I try not to go to either but when it comes to cleaning fluids I tend to end up in Tescos.
What do you think about traffic wardens? It’s like having an occupying force in town. Like the Channel Islands when the Nazis were there. Maybe the blue uniforms are an improvement: it helps keep the blood pressure down.
Which Bonfire Society do you go to? I watched the whole thing this year from the flat roof behind the shop. We could see all the firework displays apart from Cliffe. Commercial Square was the best.
Which newspaper do you read? I don’t tend to buy one, but if I do it’s the Telegraph.
How often do you go to London and Brighton? Brighton once a month or so, London not enough. Maybe three or four times a year.
