Clearly a woman with a great sense of humour, Angela tells me she is keen for people to realise there much that is funny in the film. In her article, she says she hopes that: “maybe someone will leave the cinema feeling a little less judgemental of other people’s more unusual ‘passions’ and start to see, and even attempt to share, the joy. I know that there are some people out there who find living with autism an overwhelmingly negative experience, but I’d like to believe that Snow Cake gives a balanced view. It can be hellish at times, but I also know, from my experience, that amongst the heartbreak, frustration and fear we parents sometimes feel, it is actually possible to get a great big gawp of Heaven.” The interest generated by Snow Cake has meant Angela is busy with four more film projects, including one more with Alan Rickman (she says she enjoys writing for ‘grumpy, sarcastic middle-aged men’), plus an HBO production of the Anne Tyler novel A Patchwork Planet. I asked if her son Johnny has seen Snow Cake. “No! No cartoons, it wouldn’t interest him”. But he would love the soundtrack apparently, which Angela chose.
