Gig - Ska Toons

Name
: Michael Munday
Band name: Ska Toons (two words! cap S, cap T).
Role in band: Guitarist & singer (the band call me The Leader but this is purely ironic especially on stage).
Describe the band: They’re a very jolly bunch - and great fun to play with! I formed the band 5 years ago. I love soul & ska. Peter Thompson is on ‘bone. He’s a jazzer. Max (my son & heir & bass) loves hip-hop, funk, reggae… We put them all together to form our sound. Andy Pickett (tenor) joined after that, then Andy Ferguson (soprano) and Peter Rhodes (keys) and Paddy McQueen (drums) and we took off from there. When the two lads are away, Sam Yard plays bass and Fred Beer's our drummer. They really are young, which makes the average age about 53! Sometimes we have the charismatic Helen Nicholls singing with us - she's a great singer and stage presence. We mix up ska, rocksteady, lover's rock, classic pop (check out our SKApache), funk with big dollops of jazz blowing - but it's GOT TO BE FUNKY as James Brown said. Ska is great for dancing.
First gig (you went to): The Beatles at Lewisham Odeon (well, third really but I had to get that in). Then Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker (bought him a drink), Otis Redding...  oh sorry. Couldn't stop myself.
