Name: Charles Wycherley
Profession: Chartered surveyor and estate agent. I’ve been working in Lewes for 22 years: I’m a joint partner in the business, which was set up in 1853 by my great great great grandfather Henry. I’m also an auctioneer, though that’s a bit of a sideline.
Are you local: if not how long have you been here? I was born and bred in Lewes. The first Wycherley we know of in Lewes dates back to 1800. Before that we were a Shropshire family.
Best thing about Lewes? The town is so multi-faceted. Because of its look and its culture it’s attracted a variety of community-orientated backgrounds. It’s the people that give Lewes its richness of life.
Worst thing about Lewes? The road system and the parking scheme. The now-bluecoats make my blood boil. Poor road junctions, electronic signs and meters and off-centre roundabouts don’t seem to fit with a council that won’t let you paint your front door a certain colour. Though really important stuff that does affect us gets through on a nod.
Favourite pub? The Lewes Arms. But I think I’ll boycott it now they’re not serving Harveys. I’ll probably go to the Elephant now.
What’s your poison? Varied but often.
Waitrose or Tesco (or neither)? Neither. We shop around in the independent stores. If you don’t buy Lewes, the town could die.
.Which Bonfire Society do you go to? I’ve always watched and supported all the societies from the top of the office where there’s a great view. I used to love the Cliffe Bonfire Society firesite when it was at the top of Mill Lane in a natural little amphitheatre. Health and Safety would never allow that now, but it was great fun.
