Name: Sara Gosling.
Profession: I’m a shopkeeper and a partner with my husband John in Full of Beans on the High Street. We sell herbs, nuts, spices, seeds, beans, organic tofu and tempeh (which we make) and milk and ice cream and things like veggie quiches, which I make. We came here in 1978. At the time we were quite cutting edge and we chose Lewes because we thought the people would welcome this sort of food. We were right. But now the supermarkets do wholefood, so it’s a more competitive market.
Are you local? I’m originally from Kingston-on-Thames, but I moved here 28 years ago when I was 28.
Best thing about Lewes? It’s a very beautiful town to live in with lots of lovely people. There are great views. I love seeing the hills all the time, especially when the sun shines. In fact we built our house upside down, with the living room at the top, so we could see the Martyr’s Memorial.
Worst thing about Lewes? The declining High Street. We had some wonderful shops up here and they’re all going. It’s very sad.
Favourite pub? The Brewers Arms. It’s a Free House and Kevin keeps a really good pub, with good pub food.
What’s your poison? A glass or two of red wine with a meal.
Waitrose or Tesco (or neither)? I never go to Tesco, and hardly ever to Waitrose. I can get most of what we eat from my own shop! Waitrose is the only ethical supermarket, if there is such a thing, but they’re a bit pretentious and expensive.
What did you have for breakfast this morning? A bowl of muesli with banana on the top, and a small cup of black coffee, my only one of the day.
