Name: Ray Bugg. I’m half Greek and my real name is Demis as in Demis Roussos. At the football club they call me Pav, as in Pavarotti. I was called that by Gary Elphick when I first did some work at Lewes FC and it stuck.
Profession: Civil Servant. I work for Sussex Police. I’m also the kit man at Lewes FC, which is a bit of a hobby and a big commitment. I have to work three evenings a week at training and on match days. I used to help out a bit, but I got the job after Steve King and I realised that we had such a lot in common. We were both born and bred in Sutton, and played for the same football team, albeit seven years or so apart from one another.
Are you local: if not how long have you been here? Yeah, I’m local. I’ve been here 10 years. I moved down with my ex. I already knew Lewes from my younger gallivanting days. We used to go down Brighton Saturday night, and then come on to Lewes for dinner on Sundays. So we were looking for something a bit different, and we tried here, and we both fell in love with the place.
Best thing about Lewes? Lewes itself. Its life, its buildings, its backstreets, its restaurants. Above all the people here.
Worst thing? The fact everybody knows your business. I come from London, d’you know what I mean?
Favourite pub? The Gardners and the John Harvey Tavern. The Gardners because it’s an old-style talking pub with good beer. The John Harvey for its atmosphere, its food and its lovely landlord.
What’s your poison? Harveys. Chiraz. Anything.
Waitrose or Tesco (or neither)? Both. I prefer Waitrose, though. It’s a better shopping atmosphere. |
