I have always thought about my body in two ways: aesthetically (from a mostly self-deprecatory angle like other women); and medically, when it is not functioning properly. I had never considered my physical self in terms of wellbeing. That was before I was dragged into the Lewes WellBeing Fest on Saturday. I felt a little socially ill at ease. I didn't have the vocabulary to talk about alkaline seaweed drinks, or ear candelling with the charming women on these stands. I just kept smiling. I drank rum-free coconut milk out of a shell with a straw and watched folks having a 'gong bath' on the stage. I saw a sign offering a non-surgical facelift for £5 which appealed to me, despite the suspiciously low price. The treatment wasn't some kind of all natural botox at all, but an introduction to an amazing 'face gym' treatment conducted by Lewes' Eden Salon. Firm thumb strokes on the forehead literally just iron away the creases - marvellous. While my friend bought a crystal lamp and had a Tarot reading, I signed up for yet another Quit Smoking programme. This one promised all kinds of tailored alternative therapies. At the end of the consultation, the therapist gave me a lung capacity test which he assured me would shock me into the realisation that smoking is not cool and glamorous and sexy. It all went wrong. My 'lung age' came out as 19 years younger than my actual age. I left the Fest feeling super healthy. Opera singing should apparently be my next vocation. |
