Classical Concert - Penelope Cave

Award-winning harpsichordist Penelope Cave will be making history when she performs in Lewes tonight - on two counts. The evening's programme, 'Made in England' will include the world premiere of a piece by contemporary composer Raymond Head. But not only is it the first time that the music has been played in public, it is also a debut for the instrument itself. And there's a local connection - the English copy is the latest creation from Lewes harpsichord maker, Malcolm Rose.

Cave is renowned for her well-planned, audience-friendly programmes interspersed with spoken introductions or contemporary readings. I talk to her on the telephone and ask whether we can expect the same from this evening's entertainment. "Oh yes!" She says, "I think the harpsichord can be a bit weighty to listen to for a long time, so I like to break it up. Also I think the historical pieces need a sort of peg to hang on". Collectively known as English Virginal Music, the works were originally played on the virginal. This was a single-strung instrument, slightly smaller than the harpsichord, and so-called because it was the preserve of 'young ladies'. Cave will be playing a range of works which includes Byrd, Handel and Purcell. "I've planned it so that each composer represents a different part of England”, she says. “So I've got Tomkins and Worcester and I'll be finishing up with Raymond Head and the Cotswolds". ER
