Such as? “I’m for peace not war. I oppose the war in Iraq, which Gordon Brown supports. I’m against Trident. I’m in favour of investment in public services and against privatisation. I’m in favour of free and comprehensive education and against tuition fees and academies. All these things must be discussed, and I am pro debate. Many members of the current government stand up, say their piece, and clear off. They never listen. In 1997 Labour promised a clean government which would be straight with people. Instead all we’ve had is spin. In my talks I want to hear everybody’s views and discuss them. My meetings are very open. There is as much laughter as applause. I want to get back to honest politics.”

Tony Benn will also be speaking at the meeting. “Tony is a great friend and a strong supporter. He has backed me all the way, and advised me on the campaign. It is very much his sort of campaign - honest and straight talking.” So does he stand a chance of winning? “The people who will be voting are the Trade Unionists, the Labour Party members and the Labour MP’s. I’ve had meetings all around the country with representatives of all three and have received a great deal of support. I have every chance of surprising Gordon Brown when it comes to the ballot.” AL
