The second photo in our series from the archives of Reeves’ extensive collection of shots of Lewes over the last 150 years is entitled ‘Mr Every’s New Motor Car’. The Mr Every in question was the owner of the steel works in the Phoenix at the time, and his new motorcar would have been quite a novelty - one of the first in town. In the picture the old and the new reach impasse as Mr Every’s progress up the High Street is blocked by a flock of sheep: a sign of the changing times. Interestingly onlookers are much more interested in the car than the sheep. The image is copyright of Edward Reeves, which has been running for four generations from 159 High Street: you can browse their selection of pictures over the years at their premises, with an eye to buying framed or unframed prints.
