It’s always difficult going to Newport, for one reason or another, and we were pleased to come away with a point from a tough game. We came under a hell of a lot of aerial pressure from a team who were playing the percentage game by getting the ball into our box as much as they could. Their defender Ian Hillier has one hell of a throw on him and he put thirteen of them into our box during the game. The defence played magnificently to keep them out.

Not on the twentieth minute, though, when a cross came onto the back post, the geezer headed it back across the goal and Jason Bowen was there to tap it in. I’m disappointed to say he was completely unmarked.

We managed to get one back before the half-time whistle. Juke Box put Boothy in - back in the side after injury - and his shot got deflected for a corner. Juke Box hit that in superbly and Leon Legge powered in a brilliant header. He’s doing well, the lad, after a sticky patch earlier in the season, and that’s his second in two games. I’ve told him that he should be getting ten a season from set pieces. I’ve said the same to Ian Simpemba. They should, with their height, power and heading ability.

We did better in the second half. Both sides made a couple of good chances: Boothy had a goal disallowed when it wasn’t him offside, but another player walking back. Then he broke through well only to hit a shot just over the bar. Then they threw the kitchen sink at us: our defenders played brilliantly to keep them out.
