Which newspaper do you read? It varies. The Guardian, the Independent, The Sunday Times. I find the local newspaper very depressing.
What did you have for breakfast? Honey nut cornflakes and toast and marmalade. And a kipper.
Are you pro or anti the Phoenix development? Anti. I think such developments are driven by greed. There is a need for the local businesses and industries which will be driven out of the area: local people need local jobs. Lewes is in danger of becoming a dormitory town with local businesses and shops squeezed out. The proposed development would strain already-stretched local infrastructure such as schools and roads and water supply. And you shouldn’t build accommodation on a flood plain.
Favourite Lewes landmark? Lewes is itself a landmark. It is so special because of its general texture and visual appearance: the red brick pavements, the black-glazed mathematical tiles, the subtle inter-relationship of materials. This is being eroded by inappropriate development. If I had to choose particulars I’d go for Brack Mount and the Lewes arms (as a unit), Bull House (which is shamefully disintegrating and should be turned into a Tom Paine Museum) and Mount Caburn.
How could you be greener? If I could afford a place to work in Lewes I wouldn’t drive so much.
What's on your hifi? Bob Dylan. Joan Baez. Wagner’s Ring Cycle, and Tristan and Isolde.
Lewes would be better if… it had a single strong Town Council, like it did in the old days.
What Lewes really doesn’t need is… any more inappropriate high-density development.
