This week’s picture from the Reeves archive was taken in around 1910 and features one of Lewes’ proud road sweepers of the time, Mr Deacon. “I love the way that he is standing so proudly and is so smart,” says Tom Reeves. “There was a lot more civic pride in those days. Also the picture has always made me wonder: is it a very small man, or a very big broom?” The picture was taken in Stewards Inn, behind the Brewers, which has hardly changed. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. We hope you’re enjoying the series as much as we are: if you know anything more about Mr Deacon don’t hesitate to contact us: we know there are still Deacons in town from a quick search on 192.com.
