This week’s picture from the Reeves archive was taken in 1912, and is of the old motor mechanics and engineers JCH Martin in what is now the Riverside Centre. It is interesting to note that the shell of the building has hardly changed in the 95 intervening years. ”The cars you can see were actually made there. You can see what was then the Bear Hotel on the other side of the river, where Argos now stands,” says Tom Reeves. 1912 is an important date in motorcar production - it’s the date that the first Model T Ford came off the production line, a process which pretty soon put paid to small-time motor engineers like JCH Martin. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
