This week’s picture from the Reeves archive was taken in the late 1800’s and features the London-Lewes stagecoach arriving in town. “What is interesting,” says Tom Reeves, “is that you can see Bridgeman the Stonemason’s in the background where Waitrose car-park is now. Bridgeman’s stayed in that location until they built Safeway in the 80’s.” We like the way the passengers are packed onto the top of the vehicle, the spotty sunshade one of them is carrying, and the trumpet that one of the top-hatted stagecoach personnel is blowing to announce their arrival into town. And also the way that the view down Little East Street has hardly changed in over a century. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
