This week’s picture from the Reeves archive was taken some time before 1870. “It was taken by my great grandfather Edward,” says Tom Reeves, “on a wet Collodian negative. I think it’s at the Eastgate Wharf railway arches near where Waitrose now is, though I stand to be corrected. You can see from a notice on the wall that these tricycles were for hire, from CH Markwick. It’s a highly-posed shot.” We love the little kid on the right, now long dead, who for some reason is posing with his hand solemnly placed on his chest. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
