We won a tough game at home to second-in-the-table Salisbury on Friday night, and I was very pleased with the result and our performance. Salisbury are a hard, physical side, just like Histon who we beat a fortnight before, and we knew we had to win the battle to win the game. Everybody had to stand up and be counted. Everybody had to put their head on the line. Nobody could shirk a challenge. We knew that if we matched them physically we’d have the quality to outscore them.
We had three half chances in the first half. Boothy was through, but he got the ball tangled in his feet. Gary Holloway and Boothy both had the chance to shoot left footed at the goal, but they elected to put it onto their right foot and square the ball towards Craig O’Connor, and the chances were wasted. ‘Just smack it!’ I shouted, but they didn’t hear. Salisbury, for their part, hit the crossbar, through their blonde lad, Prince.
In the second half Willo made a great save on 65 minutes to keep the score square. He’s a quality keeper who was playing in the Football League a year ago, and his presence at the back has given our defence more solidity and confidence. We’re hoping to keep him for next season. He’s got a great future in the game; let’s hope it’s with us.
Within five minutes we’d scored. It was a brilliant move: this was when our quality shone through. Kenno passed inside their full-back into the box. Gary Holloway cut it back to Craig O’Connor. Craig flicked the ball up with his first touch and volleyed it in with his second. That proved to be enough to win the game. 1-0, and we’ve now got 19 points out of 21. It’s an unbelievable run, and it’s kept us in the hunt. |
