As it’s operatics week Tom Reeves dug us out a picture of the third-ever Lewes Operatics Society performance, or Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, back in 1913. “The show, then as now, was put on in the main room of the Town Hall,” says Tom. “It’s nice occasionally to know that some things never change.” We love the rudimentary scenery and we love the way the orchestra look so dignified while the cast looks more raucous. We also wonder about the smugglers' costumes, assuming that some of the cast have merely dragged their Bonfire Boy clothes out of the wardrobe. Notice that there are no women in the cast. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
