Last Wednesday we went out of the Sussex Senior Cup against Worthing, which left me very angry. We didn’t turn up on the night, and that was that. It was like an end of season nothing game. I can’t say my players didn’t try hard, but the other mob tried a hell of a lot harder. They played two or three times above themselves. We didn’t get the rub of the green - maybe we should have had a couple of penalties - but we didn’t do enough for the level we’re at. I know how much this competition means to the fans, and it means a hell of a lot to me, too. For the holders to go out like that was a disgrace. I was fuming.

There’s a transfer window at the end of the season, after which you can’t sign any new players. Five minutes before the window closed I signed Marcel Mackie, who’s played for the Spurs first team, and is an England Under 20 international. I hope that I’ve finally solved this season’s left-back curse. He left Spurs in the summer, and was a free agent after playing a while for Kettering. He’s a pacy, skilful lad. He’ll be with us until the end of the season.

I started him in the game against Welling on Saturday. It was a tough start. I said that Histon and Salisbury were direct teams. Jesus, Welling are more direct. Direct, direct, direct. Long ball. Long ball. High ball, high ball. They’re a massive team, with two defenders who are over six foot three, and strikers and midfielders to match. You’ve just got to defend against them, and they keep coming at you. We didn’t penetrate like I thought we might. The wind didn’t help - it was a swirly old day - but we didn’t keep the ball on the floor enough, and they kept lifting it into the air.
