It wasn’t a great game to watch. Willo had one save to make - a dipping volley from a free-kick, and their keeper didn’t even have that. So a draw was a pretty fair result. We really needed a win - as they did - but winning at Welling is a tall order, and we didn’t pull it off.

On Tuesday we played out another 0-0 draw, this time at Basingstoke. It was a rubbish game on a bobbly pitch. We had a few players missing - Lewis Hamilton, Kenno and Andy Drury. When we have a full team, we can look like world-beaters. When we lose a few key players we can look distinctly average. We should have had a penalty in the last five minutes, when one of their defenders punched the ball on the goal-line. It was a stonewall pen - everybody saw it but the ref. Afterwards he admitted he had seen the handball, but he said he couldn’t see who’d done it. I said “if it was one of my players, they wouldn’t have punched it off the goal-line back into play. They would have punched it into the back of the net,” which is a fair point, really. We didn’t play well enough to win the game, but an extra two points would have been more than useful - all the other midweek results went our way. A play-off place looks less and less likely now, but while there’s a mathematical chance, we’ve got to keep on believing, and don’t doubt it, my players will be right up for the Havant game on Saturday.

Next home game: Havant (Saturday 7th April)
Next away game: Bognor (Monday 9th April)

Welling v Lewes last Saturday: nice colours, terrible game
