“I was being born at the time of the 1960 flood, so I don’t remember it in much detail,” says Tom Reeves, whose father took this picture. “By all accounts it went on longer, but it wasn’t as deep.” Tom points out the wellies everyone’s wearing, the guy in the leather raincoat on the right, and the policeman at the bottom of Cliffe Bridge. “Notice how the traffic was going two ways on Cliffe in those days,” he says, “and how Argos was then a Caffyns.” We can’t read the sign on the shop which is now Bill’s. Does anyone remember what it was then? The 1960 flood, by the way, started on November 3rd, and led to the cancellation of that year’s bonfire celebrations. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
