Climate Change - Official launch of Transition Town Lewes

You are now experiencing the hottest April since records began and the Met Office is predicting the hottest year on record. The response in Lewes: What lovely weather we’re having! I am reminded of the frog in the Inconvenient Truth, waiting for the hand to come from on high to pluck us from the gradually warming water just before we boil.

But as Caroline Lucas said in her inspirational talk at Pelham House last week, ‘The government is not going help us make the transition from fossil fuels anywhere near soon or strong enough - governments only respond to what they think is popular and nowadays they lack leadership and vision. If anything is going to happen it will come from the grassroots. Transition Towns are a brilliant response to climate change and peak oil and I think Transition Town Lewes has a really promising chance of succeeding. Don’t wait for government to act - all of you in the room have the power and expertise to do that.’

The Lucas talk was the end of a two-month Peak Oil programme, and now Transition Town Lewes will have its Official Unleashing on Tuesday 24 April. The speakers will be Rob Hopkins, the hugely inspirational and young founder of the Transition Towns initiative, Dr Chris Johnstone, author of Find Your Power and myself, Adrienne Campbell, Lewes resident and writer. It promises to be an event to be remembered for years to come. AC
