Big Sussex Weekend

Have you ever seen the 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside from the top of Lewes Castle? It’s a stunning experience which makes you realise that when it came to building structures which completely commanded the local area, the Normans knew exactly what they were doing. And it is, without doubt, the best view in town. But ask around and you’ll find that most Lewesians rarely bother to visit their own castle. That’s what the tourists do. This weekend is a good opportunity to redress that situation, and to visit a number of other local attractions, to boot. The Big Sussex Weekend is a council-led enterprise encouraging people to visit the wealth of local attractions abounding in the county by offering discounts on the entrance price.

Other attractions include Anne of Cleves House, Newhaven Fort, The Seaford Museum, Drusillas, Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum, Leonardslee Lake and Gardens, Hertmonceux Castle, Arundel Castle, Fishbourne Roman Palace and Eastbourne Heritage. We are living in the age of the city-break where people think nothing of taking advantage of budget airlines to fly abroad for two or three days to enjoy a weekend in the sun enjoying the culture on offer in different European countries. In doing so we tend to ignore the wealth of heritage that abounds on our doorstep. To find out more information check the Big Sussex Weekend website to download discount vouchers, or visit the tourist office where they can do so for you. AG
