I keep a log of all the games I go to see for scouting purposes and to take a look at future opposition. At the last count this season it was 162 games, sometimes travelling 100 or 200 miles. People think that you just turn up to training and to the matches, but that’s not the case. It was nice to get some recognition.

After the game Gary Holloway won the supporters’ award for the best player of the season. I’d like to congratulate him on that. Gary has always played at a higher level, and it took him a while to acclimatise, but since Christmas he’s been an outstanding contributor. He’s skilful, and he gives it his all. He’s a wanna-win player. He hates losing. He’s a big asset.

Congratulations, too, to Histon, who won the league in only their second season. They made the play-offs last time round after promotion from a lower league. They play direct football, and they play it well. They put the ball in the air a lot. It’s not the sort of football I’d play, but they’ve done it well, so all credit to them.

Now it just remains to see which teams make the play-offs to join them. Of those in the running to go up, I fancy Salisbury to win their second promotion in a row; though I’ve got a sneaky feeling about Newport. Bishop’s Stortford, who we’re playing in the last game of the season, are one of the teams still in the hunt, so it will be a tough game. But we’d like to end it on a winning run, so we won’t just be there to make up the numbers. After the final whistle the players will get a bit of time off to relax with their family and friends, and have a holiday. None of that for me. That’s when the graft starts, assembling the squad for next season.
