This week’s Reeves’ photo was taken in 1879 and features the tobacconist and newsagent Mooreys, which is still operating from the same street. Things have changed since then, from the exotic nature of the wares on offer (‘Flor de Dandigul’ cigars!) to the kind of news on the Sussex Express publicity boards. No cats up trees here, but ‘Zulus Ruted - 547 Killed’ “I trust, says Tom Reeves, whose great great grandfather Edward took the picture, “that it was not referring to the Cliffe Bonfire lads.” Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
