Sculpture - Sandfold Farm

I ring the organisers of the Sculpture Trail in Sandfold Farm, Selmeston, to see what this outlying event in the Brighton Festival is all about. I talk to Louise, but co-organiser Diane is also very much in the background. “We’ve got a nice collection of sculpture in a beautiful setting,” says Louise. “Say it’s eclectic,” shouts Diane. “An eclectic collection of sculpture…” It’s a novel way of interviewing event organisers, but it’s effective. I find out that five sculptors’ work, in total about 20 pieces, will be scattered around a bucolic woodland setting, between oaks, willows and silver birches, in a private 3-acre garden. That there will be a large shed exhibiting the paintings of a number of other artists. “The gallery will be more ‘Country Living than Cork Street’, shouts the voice in the background.

There will be plenty of other things to see, do and buy, I find. “We have some fabulous deck chairs with floral vintage fabric,” says Louise. “There will be jewellery, bags and ceramics on sale. There will be a teepee, with activities for kids, including mosaic painting. And tree fairies.” The sculptors involved, all local, include Si Uwins, Damian Partington, Rosie Bradshaw, Karen Norfolk and Aimee Saic. The painters in the gallery include Nicola King, Louise Walton and Susie Monnington. There will be ‘delicious cakes and tea’. It’s on for the next three weekends; you’ll find signs for Sandfold Farm leading you off the A27. I’m asked to mention that there are a number of ponds in the woodland. Sounds like a scream.
