Gig - Ramsay Midwood

The first time Barn D’Or promoter Mike Lance booked “LA based blues cowboy” Ramsay Midwood to play, it was at a “tiny shoebox of a venue”, and Ramsay almost didn’t make it to the stage. “It was getting close to the time he was supposed to be on and we were all wandering around scratching our heads trying to find him”, he tells me. “Eventually I found him in the back of his car, fast asleep. I managed to wake him up but he took one look at the tiny little pub he was due to play in, laughed his head off and went back to sleep”.

Tonight, Lance has managed to tempt back a hopefully-fully-conscious Ramsay to play the distinctive canvas venue at Barcombe (“and a couple of rounds of golf”) for his only gig outside of London before he returns to the States. Lance concedes that the “scruffy jumper boy” is something of an ‘unknown act’ in the UK, but promises that once you’ve seen him play, you’ll be back. “Everyone who’s seen him absolutely raves about him”, he tells me. “He’s just about the most requested act in the whole of my time promoting”. He describes his music as “slow, dirty, catchy, weird - sort of trans-blues - that makes you want to keep listening to it over again”, “And I don’t even like blues”, he adds, “Mostly I think it’s washed out, pointless, gripe music, so if I like it, it must be good” .
