This week’s photograph from the Reeves collection was taken in October 1929 and shows the pitch and putt course which used to be on Baxter’s Field. The field, of course, used to be owned by the print works, which ran outdoor entertainment for its workers on the site, recently saved for public use by the Baxter’s Field Company. As well as the mini-golf, there was a football field, a stoolball alley and a tennis court. We are not sure how the donkey on the right of the picture figured in the scheme of things. It’s interesting to see how little the suburban landscape which frames the photograph has changed over the years. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
