This week’s picture from Reeves is something of a mystery. “It was taken some time in the 1920’s, outside the Town Hall”, says Tom Reeves, “but we have never been able to find out who is cutting the tape, and what the occasion was. Notice the town mace on the far left of the picture, the same then as it is now, and the way the children in the picture are dressed like adults”. Although two chaps are trying their best to pull the tape tight, it looks like the fur-clad lady in the hat is having some trouble cutting it: the mayor to her right looks like he wants to take the scissors off her and do it himself. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
