Talk - Energy saving in the home

It’s not too late to sign up for this weekend’s permaculture course, according to the organiser, Pippa Johns, but what is permaculture? It’s a way to live a more sustainable life, using a set of powerful tools to design our way into a lower energy, more efficient, healthier, happier future. The poster says this course covers changes you can make to reduce your impact in areas such as food, energy transport and waste. That’s a whole set of zero-carbon emitting power tools!
Permaculture is also the basis of Transition Town Lewes, which is, with the Pelham Institute, hosting an evening of talks next Wednesday followed by another Open Space event. The subject this time is called Energy Saving in the Home. We’ve got to keep those nasty fossil fuels in the ground to reduce ‘carbon’ - 40% of our carbon dioxide emissions come from our homes - but also, as energy gets more scarce and expensive, we’ve got to think of ways of cutting down our use of it.
As resident of Lewes, Brenda Boardman long ago helped set up Living Streets, to help reduce traffic and car pollution in Lewes. She’s moved on and up since then and is now visiting Lewes from Oxford University’s Environmental Change Unit, which she heads up. The second speaker is architect and Lewes resident Duncan Baker-Brown of BBM Sustainable Design, who is passionate about helping Lewesians reduce energy use in the home. Chairing the event is the new Lead Member of Planning at Lewes District Council, Cllr Peter Gardiner. AC
