What’s your favourite Lewes landmark? The knapped flint façade of St Michaels Church. My favourite view is up Chapel Hill to Cuilfail.
How would you spend a perfect Sunday afternoon? Lunch of lamb shank with garlic mash at the Brewers. Game of tennis at the Southdown Tennis Club, where I’m a member. With my eyes, it’s a bit difficult. I have to play by instinct. I like a swim in the Pells Pool. Sometimes I go for a walk with my friend Julian. Our favourite is along the river to Southease Holt. We head up Itford Hill, swing right and drop into the valley to an abandoned pig farm called Muggery Poke. You can build a fire and fry sausages.
What did you have for breakfast? A boiled egg sarnie and the remains of last night’s Chinese takeaway from the Beijing. I prefer the Bamboo Garden though.
Recommend a film to a friend. Casablanca. If you’ve got to make a movie, you’ve got to have tragedy. Also, the original King Kong. And that Jean Cocteau film Orphée.
And a restaurant? Panda Garden. I like the starters and crispy duck.
Where did you buy the clothes you are wearing? Boot fairs. I used to get to the Lewes one at 5am to sell vinyl. I’d buy my clothes when I was there.
What do you think of the Phoenix development? I got hammered in Viva Lewes for writing the truth. I was angry about their attack on me. I think it’s the job of a newspaper to present the facts and wait for the public to respond. The Sussex Express gives every possible view. And until the Planning Application gets published, we’re just talking into the wind.
What does Lewes really need? A cinema. A tram. And a brothel.
