This week’s picture from Reeves shows the Cliffe Bridge, some time, we estimate, around the turn of the century. Two horse-and-carriage units appear to be involved in a race of sorts over the bridge, with the vehicle on the left appearing to be about to overtake the one on the right, as a group of boater-wearing schoolchildren make sure they keep well on the pavement to avoid getting run over. The picture was one of many exhibited by Reeves during the Cliffe Independence Day on Monday, which was judged ‘a great success’ despite the weather, with over 1000 people passing through Passport Control. Cliffe is now, again, part of Lewes and the UK. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
