This week’s Reeves’ photo was taken in 1965, and features Bridgeman’s Stonemasons, aka Eastgate House, shortly to become the home of Chaula’s new restaurant. We love the fact that, pre Phoenix Causeway and pre Safeways / Morrisons / Waitrose this was a quiet little spot. And the coal truck, turning left into Little East Street. And the lettering on the bus stop sign. And, of course the conker tree, in blossom, still standing in the same spot. Reeves have an extensive archive of photos in their collection, which you can browse through at 159 High Street where the business has been running for four generations since 1858. If you know anything more about any of the photos we publish, don’t hesitate to contact us.
