Concert - Angels with Attitude

One of the main attractions of the River Festival the weekend before last was a performance by the a cappella choir Angels with Attitude, on the mound of the Heart of Reeds. Band leader Ali Bishop wrote a song for the opening of Chris Drury’s sculpted reed bed a couple of years back, inspired by the Lewes landscape, called Heartland, and the choir was to sing that, as well as a number of other songs from their eclectic repertoire which stretches from jazz classics to Maori calls. “I can’t believe how bad the weather was,” remembers Ali. “It was tipping it down, but we went ahead anyway, listened to by a few hardy souls, under their umbrellas.”

Hamsey Church, it must be noted, may not have any electricity, but it does have a roof, which means that their next concert should be more of a success. “It’s a wonderful venue for what we do,” says Ali. “We love singing in interesting local venues, and Hamsey church is somewhere we’ve wanted to perform in for a while. It should be quite atmospheric. Pensive, meditative music for a summer evening. We will be singing in candlelight.” I tell her I love the name of the choir. “It suits us,” she says. “We didn’t want it to be a stuffy choir; we don’t want anyone scared off by our singing.” AG
